Gaining Proficiency

There are two problems we have recognized with African youths or students coming from third world countries, like those coming out of Africa. They are usually older than the classes they come with. As a result, they cannot go in those classes as per the standard set in the US. Those students are put in higher classes; they cannot measure up and they fail. As the consequence of their the failure, they exhibit challenging behaviors and don’t do well in their classes. Our job is to work with the student to gain proficiency.

Discipline At school & home

The challenging behavior exhibited by these students is their way of running from their problems. When they are failing, they want to get out of school. They want to be left alone. Hence, these students resort to unruly behaviors at school. The teachers sometimes don’t understand them; they do not communicate their problems to their teachers The second problem is that some of these students do not have educated parents. We work on their attitude and redirect them for positive behavior.

regularly attendance

If the came home with assignments and there is no one to help them, they will have to figure out on their own. If they cannot, they leave it and not turn in their assignments. The teachers think their actions are deliberate. When this problem persists, the students does not regularly attend classes. That is where we come in. We engage these students, taking the home approach. We work with them from home. Our mentors will, if they can, assist the student with homework.

Domestic violence & Family Crisis Approaches

direct knowledge

Beneficiaries will gain direct knowledge about physical, sexual, emotional, psychological abuse, and other forms of abuses. When they know they are being abused they will report it.

Victims' Self-confidence

The victims will stand up for themselves when they develop self-confidence or self-esteem. We pay more attention on how to boost they self-esteem. When they realize they have power, they will stand up to abuse.

De-escalation of tension

Our prevention approach deals with deescalation. There is no one way to deescalate tension, but both men and women are educated on when to calm down. We bring in experts to education victims and perpetrators.

Resources & Help

At every session, we point out where to get resources and help when domestic violence happens. We share state and local domestic abuse units' contact information with victims.
